The first mechanical arcade cabinets were introduced in the middle of the sixties. Firstly, they were almost solely made by Sega, with Atari & Midway joining in the seventies. The era of mechanical arcade cabinets had quite a short lifespan. In the middle of the seventies it was replaced by "The Golden Era" of classic arcade cabinets, as we know them today. Sega, Atari and Midway were among the first manufacturers. They were followed by companies such as Taito, Irem, Konami, Data East, Williams, Capcom, SNK, Namco and many others that swiftly found out that this type of entertainment is the gold mine and started the arcade cabinets development race.

The first cabinets were equipped by just a black and white screen. Games had elementary graphics, such as the first known released game PONG (a moving platform on both sides of a screen, with a ball in between). It's important to state that this game is truly a collector's holy grail.

The beginning of the eighties saw the introduction of cabinets with color screen that started a true gaming mania. Almost instantly, giant gaming complexes, local game rooms and remote gaming caravans were built. There was no good club or another entertainment office without an arcade machine.

The arcade scene saw the biggest thrive from the beginning of the eighties to the end of the nineties. After that, it slowly started to fade to black...

 První mechanické zábavní automaty začaly vznikat, již polovině šedesátých let a prakticky jediným výrobcem byla společnost Sega, v sedmdesátých letech se přidaly firmy Atari a Midway. Éra mechanických automatů trvala, však poměrně krátkou dobu a v polovině sedmdesátých let ji vystřídal "zlatý věk" klasických herních videoautomatů, tak jak je známe i dnes. Mezi prvnímy výrobci byly opět společnosti Sega, Atari a Midway. Další společnosti jako Taito, Irem, Konami, Data East, Williams, Capcom, SNK, Namco a mnoho jiných, velmi rychle zjistily, že právě tento druh zábavy je zlatý důl a začaly se předhánět ve vývoji a výrobě zábavních hracích automatů.

První stoje disponovaly pouze černobílou obrazovkou a hry měly velmi jednoduchou grafiku, jako první známá vydaná hra byl PONG (na každé straně obrazovky plošinka a mezi nimi míček), nutno podotknout, že tato hra je v dnešní době pravý sběratelský klenot.

Počátkem osmdesátých let se začaly objevovat automaty s barevnou obrazovkou a celý svět postihla pravá herní mánie. Takřka okamžitě začaly vyrůstat obrovské herní komplexy, lokální video herny, mobilní herní maringotky a automat nesměl chybět v žádném klubu, baru, diskotéce či jiném zábavním podniku.

Největší rozkvět zažila arcade scéna od počátku osmdesátých do konce devadesátých let, po té začala éra video automatů upadat v zapomění...
